I got my first real taste of the dirt back in 2008 with a Dirty Spokes race, and I've been hooked ever since. Returning to the starting line this past weekend felt like coming home. Tim and the entire Dirty Spokes crew are absolutely top-notch at what they do, curating paths that challenge your endurance while keeping the community spirit alive.
The Conditions
It had rained for two days prior, meaning the trail was a thick, unforgiving layer of slick Georgia clay. Footing was treacherous, and the climbs felt twice as steep. But that's exactly what we sign up for. The technical descents required absolute focus—one wrong step and you're sliding into the ravine.
"There is no escaping the mud; you just have to learn to run with it."
Around mile 8, the canopy opened up slightly, letting in this warm, golden light through the pines. It's moments like that when the pain in your legs fades into the background and you're just purely present in the woods.
Final Thoughts
Crossed the finish line completely caked in mud and exhausted, but entirely fulfilled. If you're looking for a race that tests your mettle but treats you like family, Dirty Spokes is the way to go.
